GrainMate GM-103: the Ghana-made meter redesigned around its controls
A fresh Isaac Sesi profile brings an older hardware redesign into focus. GrainMate's dedicated keypad functions offer a useful way to examine everyday controls, documentation and support.

A handheld tool can have a promising measurement function and still frustrate the person pressing its buttons. GrainMate, the grain moisture meter made by Ghana's Sesi Technologies, offers a concrete design example. Its maker describes replacing frequently used buttons and separating their functions in the GM-103. The interesting question is how clearly a tool communicates its jobs, not how impressive it looks in a photograph.
Three things to know
- The timely starting point is a 16 October founder profile; the GM-103 redesign was documented in May 2023.
- Sesi attributes its keypad changes to customer feedback about buttons and multiple functions.
- A documented design intention is not a measured durability result, a grain-quality verdict or proof of current availability.
An older redesign, newly worth examining
TechCabal's 16 October profile of Isaac Sesi is a reason to revisit the company, not evidence that a new meter launched this week. Sesi's own GM-103 announcement is dated 29 May 2023. Keeping those dates apart makes room for a useful design story without manufacturing a launch or borrowing someone else's interview as PING's reporting.
The company's account of its beginnings names Sesi as its founder and describes his work localising a meter originally developed at the US Department of Agriculture. Its product page says GrainMate is manufactured in Ghana. That history credits adaptation and local engineering, rather than suggesting the instrument appeared from a single inventor working alone.
What changed at the keypad
In the 2023 post, Sesi says feedback on the GM-102 identified buttons breaking or falling off under frequent use. The GM-103 introduced keypads and more specialised functions instead of relying on one button for several jobs. These are the manufacturer's descriptions of a problem and its response. PING has not inspected failed units or measured whether the replacement design lasts longer.
For another hardware team, that suggests a modest review exercise: list the actions a user repeats and the controls assigned to them. Can a person identify the intended action without remembering an unusual sequence? Ask a prospective user to explain the labels before demonstrating the tool. Record confusion rather than smoothing it away with an expert standing beside them. This is a proposed method, not a GrainMate usability result.
Read the workflow alongside the model number
Sesi's general GrainMate page describes inserting a probe, selecting a grain type and taking a reading. It also lists adjustable grain calibration and replaceable AA batteries. That page contains older imagery and a 2021 publication timestamp. Use it to understand the product family, then obtain the instructions and specification for the exact unit under discussion. Do not quietly merge several generations into one current model.
Calibration deserves a separate question from ease of use. Ask the supplier who is authorised to adjust the instrument, what reference or procedure applies and how the setting is recorded. A calibration feature on a webpage is not evidence that a particular unit is correctly calibrated. This article supplies neither operating thresholds nor a judgment that any grain is suitable for storage or consumption.
A useful control still needs a support route
Ask about replacement parts, servicing, instructions and who answers when the display or keypad behaves unexpectedly. Those are questions for the seller, not claims that parts or repair services are currently available everywhere. For a buyer outside Ghana, including in the UK, confirm the actual supply and support arrangement rather than assume that a Ghana-made product has an international service network.
GrainMate's documented redesign is a reminder to examine the repeated action, not just the headline capability. Clear controls, model-specific instructions and an answerable support route are practical design questions. Explore more on PING's Innovation desk.

- Checked 19 October 2026. Discovery: TechCabal's Isaac Sesi profile was published 16 October at 11:35:27 +01:00. It reports a meeting on 26 July, but that is not PING reporting and no interview-event year is inferred. The primary GM-103 redesign post is dated 29 May 2023, not a 2026 product launch. The general GrainMate page has a 2021 publication timestamp and mixed-generation illustrations; features on it are not silently promoted to a verified current GM-103 specification. Company homepage/about pages have no visible publication date in the retained bodies. Company descriptions of origin, Ghana manufacture and keypad changes are attributed. No moisture threshold, food-safety result, accuracy/durability measurement, revenue benefit, price, current stock or international availability is verified. Fresh public-archive and local packet-title checks found no subject duplicate. Techpoint's homepage returned a 403 challenge and was not retried.
